This is the journey of S/Y Sara, a sailboat from 1973 that was (un)lucky enough to cross paths with Giulia Sent, a marine scientist with a life-long passion for sailing.
Giulia swears she once heard her boat whisper a wild secret: a dream of one day becoming a research vessel (R/V). She is now on a quest to make Sara‘s wish come true.
Our story
Giulia bought her boat in December 2022 and moved aboard full-time in April 2023. Since then, she can’t imagine herself living on land ever again. While using the boat as her home base in Lisbon as she pursue a PhD in Marine Science, she began dreaming of a grand voyage: sailing from Lisbon to her hometown of Venice (and back).
Saving money, fixing the boat, and finish the PhD on time became her primary focus, as the only way to make the voyage possible.
Yet, as she was planning the trip, Giulia started to feel that something was missing: sailing thousands of miles without collecting oceanographic data would be fundamentally wrong for a marine scientist. And so, the Becoming R/V project was born: a journey to turn a sailing dream into an opportunity for ocean observation.
