I’ve been quiet around here lately. It turns out that writing a PhD thesis demands every last brain cell I have. But the thesis is done, the refit has officially started, and things are suddenly feeling very real (and scary!).
Sara, apparently unhappy about months being ignored, decided to remind me of her presence by developing a few electrical problems. A couple of weeks without the fridge, a couple of days with no electricity at all. A bit dramatic, but fair. Thankfully it turned out to be an easy fix, and everything is back in order.
The scientific equipment has also arrived, and I have to say, it is super cool! The mini microscope has already stolen more hours than I’d like to admit. Water samples from the marina don’t sound glamorous, but once you’re watching plankton under magnification, it’s hard to stop.
A few days ago Sara was hauled out, and the list of jobs for the first week looks like this:
- Remove the mast
- Send liferaft for inspection
- Clean and inspect the sails
- Remove and dry out the rotten wood on the cabin exterior
- Remove the genoa travellers and propeller shaft
- Start sanding the wooden cabin
The bottom is in much better shape than I feared, seems the work I did two years ago wasn’t too bad after all!
I’ll be posting weekly boatyard updates here, and daily content on my Instagram page for anyone who wants to follow along more closely. Stay tuna. 🐟
